Cloud datacenters are located where power and cooling are inexpensive. These are far away from population centers, where end users actually live. Since higher latency means lower bandwidth, performance from the Cloud can suffer. Edge Computing sits inbetween the two, terminating end user connections locally, and allowing for buffering and additional computing logic to be executed as close to the end user as possible, while still communicating changes with Cloud-based systems. This kind of asynchronous capability means that applications can accelerate delivery to the end user while still forwarding needed updates and other state information to the Cloud.
