Simplifying Network Automation in 5G Deployments with AI - Shamik Mishra, Altran
5G with its service based architecture has introduced flexibility and agility within its network. However, a 5G network is expected to be heterogeneous with multi-vendor network functions, virtualization, policies, real-time low latency edge computing applications, large density of small micro-data centers etc. This will lead to a complex management model and a potential risk of higher cost of maintenance. On the flip side, the data acquired from these different elements in the network has a potential of simplifying the network slice management, orchestration and performance management. It can improve capacity planning and automation through AI and analytics. In this presentation, we will discuss the challenges and find potential solutions. We will evaluate the role of open source projects like ONAP, gaps in specifications, challenges in data aggregation and monetization.

OpenStack at the vRAN Edge: PTP Live Demo, Up to Kubernetes - Franck Baudin, Red Hat
You just have deployed your NFVi successfully and you are eager to onboard your vRAN VNFs and CNFs. But hold on: is your NFVi properly configured? Tempest and Rally tests passed at 100%, but is it really enough for NFVi?

I will demonstrate, live, how to perform your OpenStack for Telco post-deployment validation, with open source standard NFV tools, and verify if the PTP accuracy is compliant with vRAN requirements, as well as Real Time characteristics. We will deep-dive on “why?” a Real Time Linux and KVM are required for PTP, and the fine tuning implied by Real Time.

I will use a typical vRAN/Edge OpenStack deployment for this demonstration, hosting Real Time virtual machines and Kubernetes Telco Containers. All typical networking features will be activated at once: SR-IOV, OVS-DPDK, KVM-RT, Distributed Compute Node, collectd, FPGA, Numa Aware vSwitch and PTP.

Provisioning IoT Devices - Cagdas Doner, AirTies Wireless Networks
IoT devices need to get configured for Internet access. As they are constrained devices with lack of input peripherals, they require a configurator smartphone for data exchange. The exchanged data might be Wi-Fi SSID and password like credentials. There are several methods to accomplish this task but due to user interaction, must be finalized with an elegant experience.

In this representation, most popular device provisioning methods will be covered. You will learn about vendor based implementations and their infrastructures like 802.11 AP, monitor and promiscuous mode. Not only 802.11 but also other provisioning mediums like sound and light will be highlighted.
Cagdas's experimental visible light communication based method will be also represented and you will have a tiny demo at the end of the session.

Container Network Functions or Cloud Native Network Functions for 5G - Azhar Sayeed, Red Hat
Containers encapsulate microservices and allow flexibility and reusability with respect to deployment of components. However, they also create complexity as a single network function can be divided into several micro services and in turn into several containers. These micro services must now be packaged together and managed together to exhibit the behavior of a network function.

This presentation looks at containerization of DU code as an example to show how a VM based DU can be disaggregated into micro services and what challenges we face when deploying such containers on bare metal and Kubernetes environment.

Topics such as KNI, Istio and Real time kernel will be discussed in context to building a containerized network function for 5G.

Next Generation of SDN/NFV – A New Metro Computing Network - Ruobin Zheng, Huawei Technologies
The industry faces a strategic transformation from “device, PIPE and cloud” to “device, EDGE and cloud”. Four challenges of this transformation will be discussed: Scalability, Statistical computing multiplexing, multi-cloud networking and routing. A new Metro-Computing Network is proposed connecting computation to data dynamically and making edge islands just like one whole cloud with the purpose of network-level scalability and best statistical computing multiplexing. SRv6 like ServiceWire is introduced to support not only network programmability but also computing programmability. Finally, an innovative compute-aware routing is discussed to address edge-computing routing difficulty. It expands the routing domain to the computing domain, inject the computing capability into the network. Thus, the network can select the best edge-computing sites along the best route for computing tasks.
