Tutorial: Take a Test Drive with the Cloud Native Network Function (CNF) Testbed - Sponsored by Cloud Native Computing Foundation (Pre-registration required)
The Cloud Native Network Function (CNF) Testbed is a CNCF initiative to provide a neutral space for exploring and evaluating open source networking technologies and their interoperability. The initiative fosters cross-community collaboration and includes contributors from FD.io CSIT, Network Service Mesh and OpenStack among others. This tutorial will walk through how users can provision the hardware and cluster infrastructure on Packet bare-metal machines as well as the deployment of various telecom-focused use cases onto those clusters. There will be time for Q/A as well as looking at the implementation for some components of the CNF Testbed. Attendees should leave this tutorial with an understanding of how to deploy the CNF Testbed with their own Packet accounts and to contribute to the CNF Testbed initiative.

Please ensure you bring your fully charged laptop with you. Further instructions will be disseminated upon arrival. Pre-registration is also required and you can add this to your registration.

Kernel-based Forwarding Plane for Network Service Mesh - Radoslav Dimitrov, VMware
Network Service Mesh is a novel approach solving complicated L2/L3 use cases in Kubernetes that are challenging to address with the existing networking model. The forwarding plane is one of the two key components of Network Service Mesh which makes this possible. This session will cover the implementation of a pure Kernel-based forwarding plane using the built-in network facilities such as netlink. By leveraging the Linux kernel networking, it makes it possible to enable a wide variety of network protocols that are not yet native in Kubernetes. How Open Networking can Manage Large-Scale VPCs on Top of Clos Network Architecture - Honghui Xiao & Honghao Wang, ByteDance
Modern Data Centers are based on Clos Network Architecture, which is extremely simple yet unfriendly to applications. It is common to build Software Defined Data Centers on top of it and use VPCs to host applications. However, when building a distributed system that need to support Internet services with hundreds of millions of Daily Active Users, a VPC has to be large-scale. This imposes big challenges on the backend SDN system, which need to copy massive control-plane data among hosts , keep it consistent and program it into data-plane rapidly.

In this proposal, we will introduce our practice of building large-scale VPCs that each can host tens of thousands of VMs in Bytedance’s production environment. We will share our architecture which is based on Open Networking, such as Open vSwitch, OpenFlow, and EVPN. Also, we will explore the problems encountered and how they were solved.

Who says You Shouldn’t Run VMs and Containers Together? - Ian Jolliffe & Glenn Seiler, Wind River Systems
As momentum around the edge continues to grow there is a widely held thesis that you shouldn’t run VMs at the edge. But what about the VM-based applications that exist today? Converting every application to a container isn’t a viable solution for the near future. What is needed is an infrastructure platform that can support VMs and containers as equal citizens and provide the same level of services for both. The session will take a look at the evolution of VM/Container architectures that have been used to address the growing use of containers and then take look at the StarlingX project. StarlingX is a full featured cloud for the edge that uses Kubernetes to provision and manage cloud native applications and when needed OpenStack VMs. Other exciting technologies like Kubevirt, Kata containers and Virtlet will be discussed as solutions for making the ecosystem as flexible as possible.

The volume of data collected by IoT sensors is very high and requires considerable resources for data processing. Edge processing enables getting the data processed closer to the source. It’s not always possible or economical to set up resource intense infrastructure at the edge.

This presentation proposes using a blockchain-based decentralized application to facilitate IoT edge processing. The resource owner can join the ecosystem and lend out the compute resources for edge computation. This concept is explained considering the use-case of video analytics at IoT edge. Surveillance cameras generate huge data that can be processed at edge to create a searchable indexed repository of the video content.

Lightning Talk: Advancing CPU Management in Kubernetes - Levente Kálé, Nokia
While the majority of the K8s managed workloads are traditionally more forgiving towards frequent context switches, sharing CPU cores, over-provisioning, etc.; these are not the only applications which would like to leverage the features of a K8s infrastructure.

K8s resource management community tried to address this issue with the introduction of the CPU manager feature, but even the existing policies have unaddressed gaps.

The talk lists the requirements still missing from the core CPU Manager component, like the absence of sub-node level CPU pools, the true physical isolation of K8s and non-K8s managed processes, process-level CPU pinning, socket alignment, etc.

The talk then introduces an existing open-source component called CPU-Pooler and showcases how can all of these requirements satisfied today in a cloud-native, and future proof way.

Large-scale Network Simulations in Kubernetes - Michael Kashin, Arista Networks
Virtual network simulation has been one of the best ways to test new designs before implementing them in production. There are plenty of tools that can help build arbitrary network topologies but most of them were designed to work on a single host.

Kubernetes presents an ideal platform to run large-scale network simulations, however its networking model, assuming a single interface per pod, is very limiting.

This presentation will examine the shortcomings of existing solutions, establish the desired requirements, provide an overview of a purpose-built CNI plugin (meshnet-cni) and demo how to build a 750-node network topology running open-source routing daemon (quagga/ospfd).

Network traffic analytics is critical to data center management and operation efficiency. The regular solution with cloud-based analytics has higher latency and delay for action feedback. This paper proposes an edge-based analytics model with close-loop action feedback to achieve real-time predictive network analytics. Under this solution, the network traffic telemetry data is collected and aggregated by the network devices (e.g. SmartNIC). The AI model is trained at cloud and deployed to the SmartNIC. The predictive analytics and AI inference is managed at the edge device of SmartNIC to achieve real-time close-loop management and mitigation.

Connecting Kubernetes Clusters Across Clouds With Kilo - Lucas Servén Marín, Red Hat
In this talk, Lucas Servén presents a solution for creating Kubernetes clusters that span across cloud providers and regions: Kilo, a multi-cloud networking provider built on WireGuard. The talk considers the real-world issues motivating multi-cloud clusters, including: providing service geo-availability, building elastic clusters on-premises, and accessing hardware accelerators from other clouds. Lucas discusses how Kilo addresses these requirements and how its use of WireGuard solves additional cluster connectivity needs, such as deploying multi-cluster Kubernetes services, VPN-ing to clusters, and providing secured access to external services. Finally, the talk demonstrates the practice of running a multi-cluster service on heterogeneous infrastructure and considers some of the issues that arise when doing so.

Approaches for Plumbing Hardware Accelerated Interfaces to Containerized Network Functions - Thomas F. Herbert, Red Hat
There is strong interest in containerizing network functions to leverage the obvious advantages of containerization. Many network functions require user space access to layer 3 or layer 2 high speed interfaces and bandwidth hungry network functions need zero copy access to the hardware offload features provided in modern 40GB and faster NICs. In this talk, Mr. Herbert will describe and contrast open source methods to plumb hardware accelerated interfaces into a containerized network function. He will discuss zero-copy methods such as SR/IOV and vDPA (vHost Data Path Acceleration.) and how vDPA shows promise as a vendor independent interface. He will also discuss vHost-user, tcflower and AF_XDP data paths and control paths. Finally, he will discuss how containers running in orchestration systems such as Kubernetes can utilize these interfaces.

I will demonstrate, live, how to perform your OpenStack for Telco post-deployment validation, with open source standard NFV tools, and verify if the PTP accuracy is compliant with vRAN requirements, as well as Real Time characteristics. We will deep-dive on “why?” a Real Time Linux and KVM are required for PTP, and the fine tuning implied by Real Time.

Suppose you want to implement Zero Trust network, where no-one can be trusted to do more than they must, and SDP, where trusted actors should be allowed access from anywhere. This way you can prevent breaches, which is good, and allow maximum flexibility for your network users, which is even better.

You could do this with smart switches and feature-rich gateways. But they are not cheap. On the other hand, commodity hardware allows you to use eBPF. This allows control all the way to the network header protocol layer, if you need it. You could bring cloud networking to your physical network.

We tried writing directly in eBPF. It’s a long, arduous task. Wouldn’t you prefer a higher-level language?

We implemented a compiler for P4 to eBPF. The result implements our SDP network dataplane.

The exposed network slice is based on a complete separation of the data- and control-plane as recommended by 3GPP.

The achieved results not only make true NFV and 5G promises, notably those referring to on-demand networks, service customization and time-to-market acceleration, but moreover they open the door to the deployment of private/tailored cloud-native 5G networks.

Building a Unified Hybrid Cloud Networking Stack using Open Virtual Network (OVN) - Ankur Kumar Sharma & Manoj Sharma, Nutanix Inc.
Open Virtual Network (OVN) is an open-source SDN controller, providing abstractions for switching, routing, security policies, etc., with steadily improving adoption in the community. However, its implementation is predominantly overlay based, which limits its usage in on-prem deployments, where backend implementation is expected to be VLAN rather than an overlay. We would like to bring OVN control plane to on-prem deployments as well.

In this talk, we will go through the limitations in OVN for on-prem deployment and the corresponding enhancements done. We will explain how these fixes, allowed us to build a unified SDN networking stack which could be used for building on-prem private clouds and overlay backed multi-tenant public clouds. We will further explain, additional work done in OVN to provide hybrid cloud connectivity between on-prem deployments and public clouds.

A lot of existing controllers focus on transport, by implementing southbound protocols such as NetConf, OpenFlow, etc...

This generic controller also focuses on content, and follow the Inversion of Control pattern. Using a model-driven approach, leveraging TOSCA, network designer are able to define their config provisioning/lice cycle management action in a self-serve manner.

This lightweight micro-service platform has two main capabilities:
1- Focuses on resources required for a given action, source(s), and how to resolve and transform them using templates
2- Enables the self-serve teams to own the configuration logic by providing scripts, or by acting as proxy to 3rd party systems (incl. vendor EMS).

The execution of the former occurs in separate micro-service, able to scale horizontally under load.

Kubernetes is becoming the choice orchestrator for containerized deployments, with users flocking to it. More workloads are becoming performance sensitive to achieve the results now expected of them. K8s has started to evolve to cater for such workloads with the creation of the CPU and Device Manager to handle the compute and device resources on a K8s node. However, these components act independently of each other, which results in sub-optimal resource allocations. These less than ideal resource allocations can severely impact performance sensitive workloads. To address the gap, the Common NFVi Task Force (CNTT) has been created by a coalition of global telecom leaders to establish a reference model, discrete architectures and a common understanding of the infrastructure needed to support the NFVs.

After an introduction to the CNTT framework, we will discuss the task force charter and goals, the joint GSMA/OPNFV sponsorship, details of the effort to build a common reference language and architecture, and most importantly how you as a vendor or provider can contribute to and benefit from the project.

Edge computing industry is increasingly using cloud technologies for seamless migration of workloads across edges and clouds. For seamless mobility workloads, K8s is a key requirement for all CSPs. Also, K8s is being thought to be good infrastructure orchestrator for all deployment types (VMs, containers and functions). As an example, collection/learning/inference components of a typical analytics app are distributed across edges and clouds. Many applications, including ONAP distributed analytics work assumes that the edges and clouds are K8s enabled.

This panel discusses existing work and novel ways of realizing a consistent app lifecycle management across distributed clouds using the extensibility of K8s ecosystem. This work is currently happening in ONAP as part of the Edge Automation effort and we see this impactful to other open source efforts such as Akraino, K8s Edge WG etc.

Container Network Functions or Cloud Native Network Functions for 5G - Azhar Sayeed, Red Hat
Containers encapsulate microservices and allow flexibility and reusability with respect to deployment of components. However, they also create complexity as a single network function can be divided into several micro services and in turn into several containers. These micro services must now be packaged together and managed together to exhibit the behavior of a network function.

This presentation looks at containerization of DU code as an example to show how a VM based DU can be disaggregated into micro services and what challenges we face when deploying such containers on bare metal and Kubernetes environment.

Topics such as KNI, Istio and Real time kernel will be discussed in context to building a containerized network function for 5G.

Enabling DPDK in Akraino and Airship for 5G networks - Georg Kunz, Ericsson & Cheng Li, Intel Corporation
The Akraino project is defining and implementing reference software stacks to enable edge use cases. In case of 5G networks, network performance is key. For this reason, we have been working on a performance optimized software stack in Akraino by adding support for OpenVswitch with DPDK to the Network Cloud Unicycle blueprint. To this end, we introduced DPDK support to the underlying Airship and OpenStack-Helm projects.

In this presentation, we will talk about our motivation for enabling DPDK support in the Network Cloud blueprint. We will introduce the high-level design of the software stack and provide an overview of how we leverage it for 5G vRAN deployments. Finally, we will dive into the technical implementation in the Airship and OpenStack-Helm projects and showcase how we achieved and leveraged cross-project collaboration.

Network Service Mesh (NSM) is a CNCF sandbox project. NSM augments the Kubernetes networking to support running workloads for domains which are not covered by the default networking provided in K8s in a declarative cloud native manner. The CNF Testbed is an initiative within the CNCF to verify and layer the grounds of Cloud-native Network Function standardization. Both groups worked together for the last several months and implemented a set of use-cases, which target to prove the viability of the approach and allow for a practical look at deploying and maintaining solutions based on Cloud-native technologies. The industry faces a strategic transformation from “device, PIPE and cloud” to “device, EDGE and cloud”. Four challenges of this transformation will be discussed: Scalability, Statistical computing multiplexing, multi-cloud networking and routing. A new Metro-Computing Network is proposed connecting computation to data dynamically and making edge islands just like one whole cloud with the purpose of network-level scalability and best statistical computing multiplexing. SRv6 like ServiceWire is introduced to support not only network programmability but also computing programmability. Finally, an innovative compute-aware routing is discussed to address edge-computing routing difficulty. It expands the routing domain to the computing domain, inject the computing capability into the network. On one hand, Marketing people and ordering system wants to be able to request any kind of services, without having to care about vendor solutions or technology used.

On the other hand, ONAP is great to design and deliver a technical network service but is expecting very detailed and precise service request: in particular if several solutions/flavors are possible, it is necessary to explicitly indicate which solution/flavor to instantiate.

Using Telecom Management Forum standards, in addition with some simple instantiation rules, we can explain and demonstrate, via a proof-of concept application, a possible solution for ONAP to interconnect, understand and process service orders and eventually deliver customer services : the missing piece between Business Operating System (BOS) and ONAP.
