5G RAN Optimization Using the O-RAN Software Community’s RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) - Thoralf Czichy, Nokia
The O-RAN SC’s RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) is an open-source container-based implementation of the RIC concept as standardized by O-RAN. The presentation will give an overview of its architecture. It shows how radio-function-specific xApps deployed into the RIC make the RAN (Radio Access Network) programmable. As part of this we also take a look at the communication protocol used between RIC xApps and gNB.

An Exclusive Deep Dive into Collaboration Activities between ETSI and Linux Foundation’s ONAP - Alla Goldner, Amdocs
Many evolving open source/ONAP areas are defined according to standard bodies under ETSI. But in order to create an easier, more productive way of communicating between ONAP and ETSI, and keep up with the pace of networking-technologies development, ONAP and ETSI recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

So how is this formal collaboration being put into practice?

Alla Goldner reveals the different collaboration activities already in place between ETSI (3GPP SA5, NFV ISG, ZSM ISG) and ONAP: the challenges, open issues, what’s next, and what has already been done… for example, mapping using 3GPP SA5 to define network management for 5G network slicing, with the implementation being carried out by ONAP’s 5G network slicing group. Another example: ETSI ZSM – its role in defining end-to-end network-management reference architecture and how it’s being mapped to ONAP modules, etc

In the recent meetups of ONAP F2F, many of the operators raised concerns on the adoption of ONAP as it is. The main challenges raised were around:

- Feasibility for the plug and play
- Readiness of the modules to be used in the field

These key challenges are being worked out in the Service Orchestrator project through the use of building blocks that are extendable workflows which could be stitched together
This greatly helps in customizing the functional flows based on the business needs solving the issues around re-usability.

Experience for Bringing up 800 Nodes NFV Cloud Using AUTO in China Mobile - Qiao Fu, China Mobile
We will share our experience for bring up an NFV cloud of 800 nodes using self-developed AUTO tools in Nanjing, China. The cloud is one of the resource pools that support the core network for China Mobile. It includes 800 x86 servers, and more than 150 network switches. Integrating such scale of NFV cloud requires huge work load, including configuring all the hardware, deploying multiple software, and verifying at each step to make sure no error will bring to the next level. In order to improve the efficiency and quality of integration, China Mobile develops an automatic integration and testing platform: AUTO. With AUTO, we reduce the whole integration period by almost one month.
We will share a demo video we took during the integration procedure in Nanjing, in which AUTO is configuring and checking the hardware and network connections, and within 30min, 641 errors are detected.

OpenStack at the vRAN Edge: PTP Live Demo, Up to Kubernetes - Franck Baudin, Red Hat
You just have deployed your NFVi successfully and you are eager to onboard your vRAN VNFs and CNFs. But hold on: is your NFVi properly configured? Tempest and Rally tests passed at 100%, but is it really enough for NFVi?

I will demonstrate, live, how to perform your OpenStack for Telco post-deployment validation, with open source standard NFV tools, and verify if the PTP accuracy is compliant with vRAN requirements, as well as Real Time characteristics. We will deep-dive on “why?” a Real Time Linux and KVM are required for PTP, and the fine tuning implied by Real Time.

I will use a typical vRAN/Edge OpenStack deployment for this demonstration, hosting Real Time virtual machines and Kubernetes Telco Containers. All typical networking features will be activated at once: SR-IOV, OVS-DPDK, KVM-RT, Distributed Compute Node, collectd, FPGA, Numa Aware vSwitch and PTP.

Challenges in Implementing Closed-Loop Standard PNF-based Services in ONAP - Lessons Learned - Ali Fouladgar & Ahmad Khalil, Tata Communications
Ali will address the challenges and lessons learned SPs face during ONAP implementation that are related to event collections, telemetry and alarm correlation systems. These challenges are caused by the transition from legacy to next-gen systems which required new tools and adapters. Even though the work that is being done currently by ONAP community is crucial, (e.g. by providing Holmes and VES mapper and collector as a standard way of formatting the telemetry and event messages), it is mostly limited to VNFs and there is no solution on how to get event messages in different formats into ONAP and manipulate them by analytic applications. This presentation will highlight what is missing in this area in order to fully support, closed-loop and zero-touch provisioning for PNF-based networks. Ali will also present the work which has been done at Tata Communications related to this subject.

Network slicing enables network operators to meet the requirements of vertical industries by providing portions of their networks for specific purposes and/or customers.

This session exposes the design, onboarding, instantiation and distribution of a fully virtualized end-to-end 5G network slice with of ONAP (Open Network Automation Platform). The on-boarded network slice concretely represents a private, customized and independent 5G mobile network and involves both core and radio-access functions. The exposed network slice is based on a complete separation of the data- and control-plane as recommended by 3GPP.

The achieved results not only make true NFV and 5G promises, notably those referring to on-demand networks, service customization and time-to-market acceleration, but moreover they open the door to the deployment of private/tailored cloud-native 5G networks.

A lot of existing controllers focus on transport, by implementing southbound protocols such as NetConf, OpenFlow, etc...

This generic controller also focuses on content, and follow the Inversion of Control pattern. Using a model-driven approach, leveraging TOSCA, network designer are able to define their config provisioning/lice cycle management action in a self-serve manner.

This lightweight micro-service platform has two main capabilities:
1- Focuses on resources required for a given action, source(s), and how to resolve and transform them using templates
2- Enables the self-serve teams to own the configuration logic by providing scripts, or by acting as proxy to 3rd party systems (incl. vendor EMS).

The execution of the former occurs in separate micro-service, able to scale horizontally under load.

Accelerating 5G Slicing Deployment via Open Source and Open Standards - Lingli Deng, China Mobile
5G is coming to scale deployment with its appealing killer application on-demand slice automation, which has been the most highlighted use-case of ONAP community lately. 3GPP SA5 defines the 5G slice management reference architecture. TMF discusses the linkage with BSS and 3GPP slicing system. There are multiple implementations of 5G slicing based on ONAP. This presentation summarizes the different ways in which the three ONAPs support slice orchestration and management implementation. It discusses the possible deployment methods of different operators using ONAP to support slicing in different scenarios, and how to further improve the various projects of ONAP to support the next step of improvement of these deployment methods, including collaboration proposals with the relevant standards organizations.

ONAP provides a rich framework to design and manage the full lifecycle service in an automatic way.
While Dublin release has been just released, there are still some gaps to reach the promise of describing and providing any lifecycle operations.

ONAP design-time tool provides a rich set of tools to model services, configure parameters and describe policies or closed-loops.

But when designing a service, the VNF descriptor is the emerged part of the modeling and there's still a lot of manual steps to prepare the full set of needed actions that will be executed during Day1/2 operations.

Lightning Talk: Auto Test Case Generation from Cloud Definition Using Rule-based Systems - Sridhar Rao, Spirent Communications
In this talk, Sridhar will present how one can take advantage of Infrastructure as code, by generating testcase automatically from the cloud definition files such as blueprints, templates, config-files, etc, using a rule-based systems such as Drools. In this talk, Sridhar will take Airship's blueprints and templates as example cloud infrastructure definition, and VNF package definitions for application information. The testcases that will be generated from reading these files would be OPNFV Testcases from different testing projects such as functest, yardstick and VSPERF. Though the Idea is novel, which has never been explored before, the challenge is in designing a rules engine to auto generate the testcases. This challenge will be the focus of the talk.

Work on creating a common understanding for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is underway with projects such as Cloud Native Networking, ONAP, and the OPNFV testing program. However, NFVs need to be deployed somewhere – in a Data Center, a Central Office or a box on the edge. That infrastructure piece does not have a well-defined standard. To address the gap, the Common NFVi Task Force (CNTT) has been created by a coalition of global telecom leaders to establish a reference model, discrete architectures and a common understanding of the infrastructure needed to support the NFVs.

After an introduction to the CNTT framework, we will discuss the task force charter and goals, the joint GSMA/OPNFV sponsorship, details of the effort to build a common reference language and architecture, and most importantly how you as a vendor or provider can contribute to and benefit from the project.

Container Network Functions or Cloud Native Network Functions for 5G - Azhar Sayeed, Red Hat
Containers encapsulate microservices and allow flexibility and reusability with respect to deployment of components. However, they also create complexity as a single network function can be divided into several micro services and in turn into several containers. These micro services must now be packaged together and managed together to exhibit the behavior of a network function.

This presentation looks at containerization of DU code as an example to show how a VM based DU can be disaggregated into micro services and what challenges we face when deploying such containers on bare metal and Kubernetes environment.

Topics such as KNI, Istio and Real time kernel will be discussed in context to building a containerized network function for 5G.

Enabling DPDK in Akraino and Airship for 5G networks - Georg Kunz, Ericsson & Cheng Li, Intel Corporation
The Akraino project is defining and implementing reference software stacks to enable edge use cases. In case of 5G networks, network performance is key. For this reason, we have been working on a performance optimized software stack in Akraino by adding support for OpenVswitch with DPDK to the Network Cloud Unicycle blueprint. To this end, we introduced DPDK support to the underlying Airship and OpenStack-Helm projects.

In this presentation, we will talk about our motivation for enabling DPDK support in the Network Cloud blueprint. We will introduce the high-level design of the software stack and provide an overview of how we leverage it for 5G vRAN deployments. Finally, we will dive into the technical implementation in the Airship and OpenStack-Helm projects and showcase how we achieved and leveraged cross-project collaboration.

Service providers need to transform their processes and skills to embrace the network automation frameworks required by the network softwarisation.

LFN projects provide a rich set of solutions to automate network automation and to test the full stack (Network infrastructure, VNF, orchestrator...) in a fully automatic manner. These frameworks offer great value for teams in charge of validating VNF and complex end-to-end services.

The presentation will depict how Orange has leveraged LFN tools (OPNFV Functest & Xtesting, ONAP VVP & onap-tests) within internal network transformation program to accelerate the adoption of CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery) Integration best practices.

We will also present how we solved some roadblocks to progress in our network automation journey and the next challenges to deploy 5G networks and embrace AI.

ONAP is an open source automation platform for networks covering networks PNFs and VNFs connecting to many virtualization infrastructures. It is setting the industry expectations for an automation platform architecture and provides an opensource platform. ONAP completed its 4th release called Dublin in June. Now we are advancing both ONAPs functionality as well as pivoting our methodology to increase the release cadence. This means we are working with overlapping releases, with the El Elto release focusing on reducing technical debt and the Frankfort release evolving ONAPs automation capabilities. On one hand, Marketing people and ordering system wants to be able to request any kind of services, without having to care about vendor solutions or technology used.

On the other hand, ONAP is great to design and deliver a technical network service but is expecting very detailed and precise service request: in particular if several solutions/flavors are possible, it is necessary to explicitly indicate which solution/flavor to instantiate.

Using Telecom Management Forum standards, in addition with some simple instantiation rules, we can explain and demonstrate, via a proof-of concept application, a possible solution for ONAP to interconnect, understand and process service orders and eventually deliver customer services : the missing piece between Business Operating System (BOS) and ONAP.
